Skyscraper City Clusters

Many chinese cities defy the traditional concept of a linearly disposed vertically growing urbanization at the center*, made popular by most big American cities during the 20th Century.

Which is to say, while the world used to spread a city around its high-rise concentrated downtown area, in cities like Shenzhen we find multiple high-rise clusters in different areas of the city. This make it look as if the cities have several downtown areas.  In this picture, we can see the skyscrapers of the Huaqiangbei district, as well as the Ping’An Tower in construction, way in the back. It’s hard to tell from the picture, but the Ping’An is actually several kms further away from Huaqiangbei, in the CBD of Futian - another totally separate cluster of skyscrapers.

The picture was taken in another cluster, the one of Luohu, which can actually be referenced as the downtown of Shenzhen, since it is the oldest and more densely urbanized part of town.

*Yeah, I have no idea where I was going with that.
